Win-Win situation under the new policy (24 November 2003)
The volume of trade on fruit and vegetable between Thailand and the PRC increased significantly during 1 - 31 October 2003 after the implementation of the Early Harvest Agreement (1 October 2003) or the free trade areas on fruit and vegetable between Thailand and China. During the said period, the import of Chinese fruit and vegetable products into the Thai market surged 77 per cent, while the export of Thai fruit and vegetable products into the Chinese market augmented 214 per cent, suggesting that the trade balance is in the Thai favor. It is anticipated that, throughout the year, the total Thai export into China will reach 8.8 billion baht, surpassing last year's record which stood at 5.5 billion baht.
The aim of the "One Thambon One Product (OTOP)" project is to promote and expand the markets for community products. Every Thai tambon (subdistrict) has a variety of local products that are potential to be developed or modernized for national and international distribution. The project is therefore providing a gateway for every potential community in the country.
The Thai Government is now improving the quality and packaging of some existing products with local manufacturers. It is providing related supports to local suppliers such as marketing strategies, researching and developing raw materials, choosing the right products, designing, transporting or even financial support in some cases. In addition, The Ministry of Commerce had divided the manufacturers of the OTOP products into 3 groups including Export Potentials, National Market Potentials and Local Market Potentials. In order to benefits the public to learn more on this project, Dr. Thaksin Shinawatra had launched a website to encourage local communities to learn and use Internet as e-commerce. Please visit http://www.thaitambon.com/English/AboutTTB.htm for further details.
